Story of a penfriend from Hong Kong... to be continued

"Ahoj!

Nicméně kvůli jejímu programu dostala nabídku do Finska.

Kallen mě a moji rodinu dokonce stihla naučit i něco čínsky.

"Hi! I am Kallen, I am from Hong Kong!"
These two phrases in Czech I could hear several times from my friend who came to visit me in May. She learned them very quickly.
But wait... where did I get a friend from Hong Kong?

Once upon a time a website was created where people from all around the world could meet, write to each other and practise just any language. It was actually a very simple website working on a basis of advertisments that each person could create and post there until they decided to change it or delete it. The other users could search each other based on some criteria. And when a user actualized their advertisment it showed up as a fist on in the search results. So it happened one day (September 17th 2010) that I changed my advertisments and few hours after that I got an email from a girl from Hong Kong. So we started exchanging emails...

Well, after a while we got tired with the emails and facebook just got so popular that we added each other and our conversation continued there. Not so frequently but we managed to let each other know there and there what was happening in our lives. Sometimes we even sent each other a postcard. Kallen's dream was to visit Europe. She also wanted to study international studies at the university in Hong Kong and she got in. She even started learning French and she was looking forward to going studying to Europe for a semester. However, because of her program, the offer she got was going to Finlad. Well, why not? I laughed at it when she wrote me that because I imagined her being in Finland from January till July when 15°C is already so cold for her... I warned her but I knew nothing would stop her from her dream. And we were both sure that we had to meet each other finally.

And so we did! In the end of May, when I just came back from my second visit to Peru and she was travelling around Europe we met at the bus station and recognized each other immediately. We just clicked. We talked the whole journey to Liberec, in the evening before I went to study for an exam I had the next day, on the way home, at night till 3 am, and so on. We shared out secrets, experiences, compared the cultural differences and stereotypes and just enjoyed the time together.
Kallen even got to teach me and my family some phrases in chinese (ok, cantonese). It was a short but really nice visit. Even though coming from so different backgrounds we are so close. And I was sure that back then 4 years ago when Kallen wrote me, it wasn't a coincidence. We enriched each other's lives. And I am really looking forward to being able to get to know Hong Kong, her family and her environment once. Hopefully soon. I have heard so much that I just can't miss it.

PS: This post was supposed to be also about my cultural notes about Hong Kong but as this post is already quite long, I will tell you next time! :)
